Hodgdon HS 6 offers the largest selection of quality smokeless propellants for any reloading application.
Hodgdon HS 6 is a fine spherical, double based propellant that has wide application in pistol and shotshell. In pistol, 9mm, 38 Super, 40 S&W and 10mm Auto are some of the cartridges where HS-6 provides top performance. In shotshell HS-6 yields excellent heavy field loadings in 10 ga., 12 ga., 20 ga., and even the efficient and effective 28 ga. HS-6 is truly an outstanding spherical propellant. Hodgdon HS 6 is identical to Winchester’s discontinued 540.
This is a flattened spherical powder. We like this powder. Do not load over max book for pressure as it can be unsafe.
This powder is versatile for 9MM. It can do 65 grain to 147 grain and match almost any other powder in terms of velocity.  Of course, that is if +P+ is your thing. It looks very similar to CFE Pistol doesn’t it, just darker.
You can fit a lot of this into a case making this a not so great choice for the beginner reloader.
During our testing, we found this powder to be among the top tier level of accuracy of any 9MM powders (overall). It doesn’t make giant fireballs out the barrel either.
We don’t really care how dirty a powder is, its easy to clean a gun, so that is not a factor for us, but if it is for you, this is no N340, etc as far as how clean it is. It is somewhat dirty.
This powder is better suited for a more enthusiast type shooter that likes to do +P or +P+ (9MM Major)
Of note, on the positive side, if you use a compensator on your gun to limit recoil from the gasses blowing out, then this powder is potentially the best you can buy, period. It gets top velocity, top accuracy tier and uses more powder so it works the comp better. You may not notice this, as its a small difference.
Warning About Smokeless Powder:
- Do not exceed the loads displayed in the reloaders guide.
- Never mix any two powders regardless of type, brand, or source.
- Never substitute any smokeless powder for Black Powder or any Black Powder substitute.
